Internazionale striker Obafemi Martins claims to be on the verge of securing a £10.9million move to Newcastle United.
Magpies boss Glenn Roeder is desperate to bring in a new centre forward and, after failing to land Werder Bremen's Miroslav Klose, has opened negotiations with Martins.
The Nigeria international told BBC Sport: "I'm close to moving to Newcastle despite all the initial setbacks. Eighty per cent of the deal with Newcastle is completed.
"Playing in the Premiership has been a long-term ambition and I am extremely delighted with the prospect of concluding that in the next couple of days."
Martins, who is contracted to Inter until 2010, has scored 48 times in 134 appearances since breaking in to the first team in 2002.
However, the 21-year-old is keen to move on after slipping down the pecking order following the arrival of Zlatan Ibrahimovic from Juventus and Hernan Crespo from Chelsea during the summer.
