Magpies wait on Taylor scan

Newcastle United's woes have intensified after it was revealed that Steven Taylor suffered a recurrence of an ankle injury in Sunday's 1-0 defeat to Tottenham.

The 23-year-old defender originally picked up the problem in last month's game against Arsenal and missed the matches against Chelsea and Stoke City.

He returned to the starting line-up for the trip to White Hart Lane but had to be substituted at half-time after the injury flared up again.

"We felt Steven was ready to start and he'd had a good couple of days' training," manager Alan Shearer told the club's official website.

"But he felt it again and we had to take him off at half-time.

"He'll have a scan on Tuesday so we'll know more then."
