Newcastle United are set to be without summer signing Joey Barton for around six weeks after the midfielder suffered a broken toe in the 1-1 pre-season draw at Carlisle United.
The 24-year-old England international joined the Magpies for £5.8million from Manchester City just over a month ago, but will now miss the start of the new season due to his injury setback.
A short statement from the Magpies read: "Midfielder Joey Barton will have an operation on Monday after suffering a foot injury during Saturday's pre-season friendly at Carlisle United.
"The England international, who was skipper for the 1-1 draw at Brunton Park, sustained a partial fracture of the fifth metatarsal in his left foot.
"The Magpies expect Joey to return in six weeks."
