Mike Williamson hopes he can help Newcastle United secure promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking after completing his transfer from Portsmouth to Tyneside.

The 26-year-old former Watford defender is keen to start playing football again after failing to start a Pompey game this season following last summer's switch to Fratton Park.

He told the Chronicle: "This is a dream move for me. I can't wait to make my debut at St James' Park.

"The fans here are incredible and now I just want to go out and do my best for them.

"It's a great move and I just want to get on with the challenge of winning promotion."

Magpies boss Chris Hughton snapped up Wayne Routledge earlier in the week and hopes to augment his squad with two more new arrivals before the transfer window shuts on Monday.
