Magpies look at Lovenkrands

Newcastle United have handed a trial to Denmark international forward Peter Lovenkrands, who was recently released by German club Schalke.

The 28-year-old former Rangers winger is on the lookout for a new club after leaving his former Bundesliga employers and the Magpies hope he may be able to help them improve.

United assistant boss Chris Hughton confirmed: "He's out of contract and he is coming in for us to have a look at.

"He is an experienced player with pace, so I think this gives us an opportunity to look at him.

"There is work going on behind the scenes to bring in the two or three players we need."

Hughton also admitted that his club are desperate to keep hold of their existing stars, adding: "We want to keep what we've got and we are not really in the position where we can afford to lose our best players.

"We are hopeful of keeping our best players, most definitely.

"Of course the things that are going on and have been going on for some time can be off-putting, but they are things we have to cope with and we won't be the only team in this position."
