Magpies land Martins

Newcastle United boss Glenn Roeder has finally managed to strengthen his strike-force with the £10million signing of Obafemi Martins from Internazionale. Roeder has been chasing the Nigeria international's signature for several months and finally got his man when the 21-year-old put pen to paper on a five-year contract after passing a medical at St James' Park on Thursday afternoon. Martins, who scored 48 times in 134 games for Inter, will go straight into the squad for Sunday's trip to Aston Villa. Roeder has been desperate to bring in a new striker all summer after Alan Shearer retired and Michael Owen suffered a serious knee injury during the World Cup.
