Magpies given Owen hope

Alan Shearer believes Michael Owen could be fit enough to take part in Newcastle United's season defining Premier League clash with Aston Villa. Owen missed last weekend's potentially disastrous 1-0 defeat to Fulham after picking up a groin strain in training last week. However, scans have revealed no significant damage and the striker could now play some part in a game the Magpies dare not lose at Villa Park. Newcastle will be relegated should they lose, while even a victory over Villa may not be enough to preserve their top-flight status. "He had a scan on Monday and there is no serious injury, so we're hopeful he'll be involved on Sunday," Shearer told the club's official website. Owen is Newcastle's leading scorer with ten goals this season despite not finding the net in his last 11 games.
