Magpies close in on Williamson

Newcastle United have agreed a fee with Portsmouth for Mike Williamson and are set to sign the out-of-favour defender.

The 26-year-old centre-half has not made a single first-team appearance for the Premier League's bottom club following his £3million arrival from Watford last summer.

The Magpies are believed to have agreed a fee in the region of £1million for the former Wycombe Wanderers defender.

"There has been an offer made which has been accepted and at the moment we're just working on the lad's terms," manager Chris Hughton told the Northern Echo.

"He's a lad with good pedigree. He did very, very well at Watford and I have known about him for a while.

"We were interested in him before he went to Portsmouth but his games have been limited there."
