Magpies close in on Coloccini

29 Jul 2008 - 13:28:48

Deportivo La Coruna defender Fabricio Coloccini appears to be on the verge of signing for Newcastle United.

Reports in Spain suggest the 26-year-old has agreed personal terms with the Magpies and is close to sealing a £7.8million switch to Tyneside.

Tottenham have also been linked with Coloccini but the player's agent, Marcelo Lombilla, told Spanish sports daily AS: "The only offer I am dealing with is that of Newcastle.

"That is the one that I brought about."

A brief statement on Depor's official website read: "The footballer Fabricio Coloccini remains in La Coruna as his future will be decided in the upcoming days."

The rest of the Depor squad have travelled to Venezuela as part of the club's pre-season plans.

The club's coach, Miguel Angel Lotina, admitted to Marca: "If Coloccini goes it will be the great disappointment of the summer.

"The team that takes Coloccini will be getting a quality footballer, a footballer to take your hat off to and they will be playing a dirty trick on me.

"He is a tremendous footballer for what he gives on the pitch and in the dressing room. If it happens, we'll look for someone else, but we're going to take it step by step.

"We have time fortunately. It's not easy to find a player of this level, but we will look for someone who can adapt himself."
