Kinnear slams Owen stories
07 Nov 2008 - 16:29:05
Newcastle United interim manager Joe Kinnear has rubbished reports which suggested Michael Owen could join Chelsea in the January transfer window.
The 28-year-old striker's future on Tyneside remains uncertain as his present contract expires at the end of the current season.
Owen would be available to talk to other clubs regarding a free transfer move at the end of the season from January onwards, but reports on Friday morning suggested Chelsea were weighing up the possibility of offering a small fee to sign him in the new year.
However, Kinnear insists those stories are completely untrue and has once again urged the Magpies to agree a new long-term contract with the former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker.
"I have spoken to Michael about it today and he is bewildered himself as to where the stuff comes from. He just doesn't know," said Kinnear.
"Of course we want to keep our best players - and I have made that known to Michael."
