Kinnear earns Duff's backing

Republic of Ireland international Damien Duff believes Joe Kinnear should be handed the manager's job at Newcastle United on a full-time basis.

Kinnear is currently the interim boss at St James' Park but is widely expected to stand aside in the near future, with Alan Shearer once again being linked with a permanent role at the club.

However, Duff has handed his backing to Kinnear, who has guided United to two wins and three draws in eight games since he took charge in September, a sequence of results that has lifted the Magpies out of the relegation zone.

Duff told skysports.com: "From a football point of view, I think we've found stability at the minute with Joe coming in. He's steadied the ship.

"We've got some good results under him. He's done well. But obviously from the top, the owner is trying to sell the club so hopefully we can get that resolved sooner rather than later.

"He's done what he has in a quiet way. He hasn't really come in shouting from the rooftops. He's someone to answer to. You need that in every line of work. I think the results have shown his impact.

"The players have taken to him. I'd love to see him get the job. We'll see I suppose over the next coming weeks or months."
