Injury frustrates Barton
23 Jul 2007 - 16:53:53
Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton is determined to return to action as soon as possible after sustaining a metatarsal injury in Saturday's pre-season friendly against Carlisle United.
Barton only moved to St James' Park from Manchester City earlier this summer, but has been told he could be sidelined until September.
He told the Evening Chronicle: "I'm absolutely gutted and devastated and it's all extremely frustrating but, unfortunately, this is all part and parcel of modern day football.
"It would be foolish to set a date on any comeback and all I can say is that I want to get back as quickly as possible, and when I do get back make sure that I'm 100 per cent fit.
"Obviously, it's a blow to me and to the manager, but I'm more disappointed for our supporters than anything else.
"The United fans have been fantastic to me since I came here from Manchester City and I was desperate to be part of the team on the opening day at Bolton which, of course, I won't be now."
