Injuries rule out key U21 duo

Key duo Steven Taylor and Danny Welbeck have both pulled out of England squad for the European Under-21 Championship due to injury.

Captain Taylor of Newcastle United will not be heading to Sweden after failing to shake off an Achilles injury which troubled him during the closing weeks of the Premier League season.

Meanwhile, Manchester United striker Welbeck has picked up a knee injury.

Head coach Stuart Pearce will now omit both players from his final 23-man squad which must be submitted on Monday.

"They will therefore not be named in the 23 players that will be submitted to UEFA tomorrow," confirmed a Football Association statement.

"Their replacements will be named in due course."

England begin their challenge against Finland on June 15 before taking on Germany and Spain during a difficult looking group stage.
