Newcastle United captain Scott Parker has been ruled out of the UEFA Cup clash with SV Zulte-Waregem because of a hamstring injury.
If Kieron Dyer passes a late fitness test he is expected to take on Parker's role as captain.
Former Charlton Athletic and Chelsea midfielder Parker becomes the ninth Magpies player to be ruled out of the trip to Belgium.
Stephen Carr (thigh), Emre (calf), Shay Given (groin), Peter Ramage and Craig Moore (both hamstring), Michael Owen and Charles N'Zogbia (both knee) and Shola Ameobi (hip) are all currently in the St James' Park treatment room.
Meanwhile, striker Obafemi Martins has apologised for missing Nigeria's international friendly against Ghana.
Martins, who returned to his homeland to look after his sick mother instead of playing against the Black Stars, said: "I apologise to the FA and the players because I know it was a very important game.
"But I also believe my mum is more important than the game.
"When I'm called upon I'll play for them, because you have to respect the national team.
"I do respect the Super Eagles a lot, so anytime they call I'll come and play."
