Hughton spells it out

Newcastle's caretaker-manager Chris Hughton has warned his players they will have to fight every inch of the way to secure their escape from the Championship. Barely three weeks ago the Magpies were flying high at the top of the table with some of the more optimistic onlookers predicting a runaway promotion charge, but four games on they are back in second place, albeit on goals scored, and have collected just two points from the last 12 on offer. Hughton said: "When you look at the group of teams who are up at this end of the table, it's testament to what this league is about. Before we even kicked a ball this season, everybody was telling us about the qualities of this division and how hard it could be. "Everybody has an opportunity to beat everybody and certainly over the last few weeks, that's been the case and it has made it a lot tighter at the top end of the table. "The frustration is always going to be there when you don't pick up points you feel you could do, and we did have opportunities to extend the lead. That frustration is always going to be there, that's part and parcel of the game. We go into every game looking to win and wanting to win, but we know that's not always going to be the case because there's always going to be another side that's going to have something to say about that."
