Hughton cools Lambert link

Newcastle United manager Chris Hughton has dismissed rumours linking the Magpies with a January transfer window swoop for Southampton striker Rickie Lambert.

Hughton, who is also being linked with Leeds United hot-shot Jermaine Beckford, had been expected to launch a loan move for former Bristol Rovers forward Lambert.

However, Hughton said: "We aren't looking to bring Rickie here. He's a very good player and one who's doing well this season, like he did last, but not one we're looking at."

Lambert has scored 20 goals in 31 appearances for Alan Pardew's Saints side this term.
