Harewood set to join Magpies

Newcastle United boss Chris Hughton is hopeful of being able to complete the signing of Marlon Harewood before the weekend.

The out-of-favour Aston Villa striker is likely to be part of the Magpies squad for Saturday's Championship trip to Ipswich Town, but Hughton has stressed that the deal is not yet signed an sealed.

"We are still waiting for finalisation and paperwork to be completed," he told his club's official website.

"But we have an agreement to bring him in and we're very much hoping the deal goes through before the weekend."

The former West Ham striker had been linked with a move to the Championship high-flyers during the summer transfer window before a foot injury scuppered the deal.

Meanwhile, Hughton has revealed that another foot injury will keep midfielder Joey Barton on the sidelines this weekend.

"Joey has a minor foot problem which isn't connected to his injury earlier in the season, but it's a blow to lose him for Ipswich," he added.
