Thomas Gravesen's agent has denied speculation claiming the Real Madrid midfielder is on the verge of joining Newcastle United.
The Denmark international is keen to leave Madrid after being told he is not in new coach Fabio Capello's plans for the coming season, and some press reports suggested he could sign for Newcastle as early as Monday.
However, the 30-year-old's representative, John Sivebaek, told the Sunday Sun: "We are not a few days away from a deal. We are not that close.
"We are in discussions with four English clubs and trying to see what is possible."
Tottenham and Middlesbrough have both been strongly linked with Gravesen, while a return to his former club Everton remains a possibility.
Despite Sivebaek's caution, the tough-tackling Dane has indicated St James' Park is his preferred destination.
"Newcastle are an excellent option," said Gravesen.
"I know the team, the supporters and to be a team-mate of Michael Owen again will be a pleasure.
"I've followed their progress in Europe and I anticipate they will qualify for the UEFA Cup in the next few weeks."
