Given hopes for new arrivals

Newcastle United goalkeeper Shay Given has backed Kevin Keegan to bring players of the right quality to St James' Park in the build-up to the new season. The long-serving Republic of Ireland international has welcomed the arrival of Argentinian winger Jonas Gutierrez from Real Mallorca and former Liverpool youngster Danny Guthrie, but believes Keegan is far from finished in the summer transfer market. "We need to get it going. We've got the gaffer in charge now and hopefully we'll sign a good few players as well," GIven told the Newcastle Chronicle. "That's important because our squad is very small. We have to try to improve on last season and push up the league. "It's a clean slate for everybody. Kevin has a pre-season to get everybody fit and he started looking at people at the end of last season. "He knows we need to strengthen as well so hopefully that will be the case." Meanwhile, the Magpies have handed a trial to Metz defender Sebastien Bassong. The 22-year-old Frenchman will spend a week training with Keegan's side as he looks to earn a move to the Premier League.
