Given concern for Magpies
18 Sep 2006 - 09:42:39
Newcastle United are hopeful that goalkeeper Shay Given has not suffered any serious injury, despite ending up in hospital after the 2-0 win at West Ham.
The Republic of Ireland custodian had to be stretchered off late on in the game at Upton Park, having been kicked in the stomach by Hammers forward Marlon Harewood.
Magpies boss Glenn Roeder said after the game: "Shay was very badly winded and is still feeling discomfort. He didn't collapse though.
"I have not seen the incident again, but I would like to think the ball was free.
"It's a man's game and I'm sure Shay would understand. It was a nasty collision, but it was one of those things that happens in games and it certainly wasn't intentional.
"We left Shay in London to be checked over and we hope he will be okay.
"He was in quite a bit of discomfort after the game, to the point where he was struggling to breathe and we wish him well."
