Fabricio Coloccini 'surprised' at being given Newcastle captaincy

Fabricio Coloccini has admitted he was as surprised as anyone to be made Newcastle's new captain and will need to take more English lessons to be a good leader. Boss Alan Pardew handed the armband to the Argentina defender after the departure of former skipper Kevin Nolan to Championship side West Ham last month. The move was a controversial one, with the likes of Toon player of the year Joey Barton overlooked for the post, and Coloccini is determined to make the most of the honour. Something to shout about: Fabricio Coloccini has revealed his delight at being named Newcastle captain The 29-year-old stopper has turned his Newcastle career around after suffering relegation in his first season at the club, and has vowed to increase further his growing authority by having more of a voice in the dressing room. But to do so he will need to take lessons to improve his English, he admits. Coloccini said: 'It was a surprise to be appointed captain because there are a lot of big players here. 'The club has a lot of leaders and I am sure the manager could have chosen any of them to be captain. That's why it's a surprise he picked me, but I'm really, really happy to have been chosen. Overlooked: Joey Barton was passed over for the armband in favour of Coloccini by boss Alan Pardew 'I spoke with my English teacher because I have to start my lessons again. I left my course last year because my English had improved to a certain level, but now I am the captain, I think it needs to be even better. 'Now I am the captain, I will have a lot more speaking to do, and I want to be able to do that properly.'   CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR FREE FANTASY FOOTBALL GAME Newcastle fear fine after FA launch riot probe following fans pitch invasion Pardew hoping to lure Bridge to Newcastle as questions remain over Enrique's futureAll the latest Newcastle United FC news, features and opinion
