Coloccini seals Magpies move
15 Aug 2008 - 09:52:15
Newcastle United have completed the signing of Argentina international defender Fabricio Coloccini from Spanish side Deportivo La Coruna.
The 26-year-old centre-back has signed a five-year contract with the Magpies and arrives on Tyneside for an undisclosed fee.
Coloccini had been with Depor for four seasons, having previously played in Spain for Villarreal, Atletico Madrid and Alaves.
He has also featured for San Lorenzo and Boca Juniors back in his homeland, while he failed to make an impact during a five-year stay at AC Milan.
Meanwhile, Newcastle boss Kevin Keegan has admitted that skipper Michael Owen will miss the season opener against Manchester United as he continues his recovery from a calf injury.
He told the club's official website: "Michael is back in training, but I think to be honest Manchester United will come a bit early. It's no good trying to kid people.
"He just needs a week in with the group doing all the things he needs to do and we're not going into that with him now, so I think it's very, very doubtful.
"It would be crazy on our part to try and short cut it because it's Michael Owen. We treat him the same as any player."
