Campbell Claims The Honours

Adam Campbell scored the goal that got a point for Newcastle United's Under-21s on Monday.

Campbell’s equaliser saw Willie Donachie’s side draw 1-1 with Bolton Wanderers at Whitley Park.

The 18-year-old striker’s second-half goal cancelled out Tom Young’s opener.

Campbell returned early from a loan at Carlisle United last month after making just one substitute’s appearance for the League One club.

The Under-21 Premier League game was watched by Alan Pardew’s No2 John Carver and coaches Steve Stone and Andy Woodman.

Bolton had the better of a largely uneventful first half, but the score remained goalless at the break.

However, Youngs was the beneficiary of some hesitant defending two minutes after the restart.

Newcastle struggled to create clearcut chances early in the second half, though in-form striker Adam Armstrong wasn’t far away with a shot from distance.

United lost Curtis Good to what looked like a hamstring injury as the hour-mark approached.

Campbell’s 72nd-minute equaliser owed everything to first-team player Gabriel Obertan, who found him in the box after beating his man.

The goal livened up Newcastle, who took control of the half.

Campbell forced a save from Andrew Lonergan as United pressed for a second goal.

And he took the ball off Lonergan late in the game and pulled it back for Obertan, but the winger shot over the bar.

NEWCASTLE UNITED: Alnwick, Tavernier, Gillesphey, Bigirimana, Streete, Good (Miele, 59), Aarons (Roberts, 64), Quinn (Gilliead, 64), Obertan, Campbell, Armstrong.
