Beye backs Shearer to stay

Habib Beye has backed Newcastle United interim manager Alan Shearer to take up a permanent position on Tyneside. Shearer was appointed as Joe Kinnear's short-term replacement in April as the former Wimbledon boss recovers from triple heart bypass surgery. Magpies legend Shearer has stressed he intends to leave the role at the end of the season, even if he preserves the club's Premier League status. Beye, though, is hopeful Shearer will stay on, despite the 38-year-old failing to record victory in any of his first five games in charge. The defender said: "He has passion. He knows the club better than anyone and I think for everyone, it would be a good boost. Building"You know when you have Alan Shearer as the manager, it is easier to attract some other players, because they will believe you have a good manager. "He said he is here for eight games - I understand that. He is here to keep the club in the Premier League. "But if we stay in the Premier League and we have the opportunity to build something good, hopefully he will stay - and I think we can still do it with the two home games coming up. "I believe, if we get out of this situation, next year will be better. "I really believe Newcastle will become what it was before, because they have been a big club, and you can't believe this club is going into the Championship."
