    Bassong drops Arsenal hint

    10 Mar 2009 - 13:18:17

Sebastien Bassong's future at Newcastle United has been brought into doubt following the French defender's admission that he would be interested in a move to Arsenal.

The 22-year-old defender joined the Magpies last summer in a £1.5million deal from Metz.

However, after his impressive form this season, reports suggest Arsenal are preparing a summer move for the former France Under-21 international.

Bassong has admitted a move to the Gunners would be an attractive proposition in a situation which mirrors former Magpies midfielder and fellow countryman Charles N'Zogbia.

N'Zogbia spoke of his desire to join Arsenal on several occasions before he eventually moved to Wigan Athletic in the January transfer window.

"Newcastle want to make me sign a contract extension. I'm waiting to see what they're going to offer me," Bassong is quoted as saying.

"My agent told me about Arsenal's interest. But I don't think now is the moment to speak about it.

"I must be focused on my football and at the end of the season we will see what happens then.

"At the moment I'm 100 per cent focused on Newcastle and I don't see any reason why this would change.

"I would lie if I said Arsenal are not a club I'm interested in. But many things can happen before we can speak about a transfer."
