Newcastle United have suspended midfielder Joey Barton until further notice, following his sending-off in the 3-0 defeat at Liverpool.
Barton's season is over after he was red-carded for a two-footed challenge on Xabi Alonso, having been entrusted with a start by interim boss Alan Shearer for a crucial clash.
A short club statement read: "Newcastle United can confirm that Joey Barton has been suspended from the club until further notice.
"The club will be making no further comment on the matter at this time."
"He deserved to be sent off, he has let himself and the club down," Shearer fumed after the loss at Anfield.
"He was not unlucky, the referee was spot-on. There was no need for him to do that in such a position.
"It was a red card and I was not happy. He has apologised, but he is suspended for the rest of the season now."
