Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton has been jailed for six months after being found guilty of assault and affray at Liverpool Crown Court.
The 25-year-old England international had pleaded guilty to the charges relating to an incident in Liverpool city centre on December 27th of last year.
In passing sentence on Barton, Judge Henry Globe QC described his behaviour as a "violent and cowardly act".
A short statement from Barton's club read: "Newcastle United notes the sentence passed to Joey Barton at Liverpool Crown Court today.
"The club is considering the verdict and will be making no further comment at this moment."
Barton joined the Magpies for £5.8million last summer from Manchester City, having been allowed to leave the Citizens after a reported training ground bust-up with former team-mate Ousmane Dabo.
