    Barton injury blow confirmed

    29 Jan 2009 - 11:11:23

Newcastle United have confirmed that midfielder Joey Barton will be out for about eight weeks due to a foot injury sustained in the 2-1 defeat at Manchester City.

The 26-year-old has suffered a fracture to the fifth metatarsal on his right foot, having been forced to limp out of the action at Eastlands just past the hour mark.

A statement on the club's official website read: "Joey Barton will undergo surgery on Friday and is expected to be out for around eight weeks.

"The injury is identical to the one Joey suffered to his left foot at the beginning of last season."

Magpies boss Joe Kinnear had cut a downcast figure after the game, with Michael Owen also suffering an ankle injury which could see him ruled out for two months.

Kinnear said: "It is one thing after another at the moment. The doctor had said six to eight weeks with Michael and ten for Joey.

"Joey's going to have a scan on his ankle as we're not sure whether he has cracked it or not. He said he felt something crack in his right ankle, so we're going to check that out.

"Michael's on crutches already for protection and he's going to have a scan tomorrow."
