Barton cleared by FA

The Football Association have decided to take no further action against Newcastle United's Joey Barton for his weekend clash with Aston Villa's Shaun Maloney.

Barton appeared to aim a punch at the Scotland international during the Magpies' 4-1 defeat at Villa Park, but the FA have opted not to take the matter any further after viewing video footage of the incident.

The FA had decided to take a second look at the clash after it went unreported by match referee Lee Mason, who didn't see the two players' tussle during the game.

Twenty-five-year-old former Manchester City schemer Barton was making just his third appearance for the Magpies after some well-publicised off-field problems.

He had previously played ten times for Newcastle following his summer move north, having suffered a foot injury during a pre-season game against Carlisle United.
