Barton aims for Magpies stay

Midfielder Joey Barton remains hopeful that he still has a future with relegated Newcastle United.

The 26-year-old former Manchester City man ended the season under suspension, having been told to stay away from the club after being sent off in the 3-0 defeat at Liverpool.

Barton told The Chronicle: "I don't know what is going to happen with the club or with the manager's situation.

"I'm just looking forward to going back and my intention is to stay at the club and help Newcastle back into the Premier League.

"If Alan Shearer takes the job and if he doesn't want me then my hands are tied.

"All I can do is try and get as fit as possible, but I have got to prepare for all eventualities."

Barton joined the Magpies in the summer of 2007, but has made just 32 appearances for the Tynesiders due to injury and off-field problems, including a short jail term.
