Ameobi extends Magpies deal

Striker Shola Ameobi has signed a three-year contract extension at Newcastle United, tying himself to the club until the summer of 2012.

The 27-year-old former England Under-21 international has made nearly 250 appearances for his one and only professional club, scoring 49 goals in all competitions

However, in recent times his future on Tyneside had seemed uncertain and he finished last season out on loan at Stoke City.

Ameobi though has benefited from the arrival of current manager Joe Kinnear and has scored three times in 14 appearances for the Magpies this season.

"I'm delighted to sign a new deal and commit my future to Newcastle United," Ameobi told the club's official website.

Kinnear is still waiting to find out whether goalkeeper Steve Harper and midfielder Nicky Butt will follow Ameobi in pledging their futures to the club as well.
