1,012 Toon Fans See 4-2 Win Over Motherwell!

It's the start of a new season, and boy did we need something to shout about!

MOTHERWELL: Hollis, Hammell, Ramsden, Hutchinson, Lawson, Vigurs, Lasley, Cummins, McHugh, Carswell, Anier.

NEWCASTLE UNITED: Elliot; Tavernier, Williamson (S Taylor, 46), Yanga-Mbiwa (Streete, 82), Dummett; Sissoko (Abeid, 68), Anita (Amalfitano, 82); Obertan (Ferguson, 74), Vuckic (Marveaux, 46), Sammy Ameobi (Richardson, 82), Gouffran (Campbell, 58).

Sub not used: Alnwick.

We've had a summer of promises; no signings (and the Mackems have signed EIGHT); players refusing to wear the shirt; Alan Pardew hanging onto his job by the hairs on his knackers; oh yes ... and Joe Kinnear!

And if ever a game of nothingness produced a result to brighten the evening sky ... this 4-2 win in Motherwell was that result.

United’s pre-season campaign got off to a winning start at Fir Park tonight (Tuesday), and 1,012 Toon fans were there to see Pardew's boys lift the gloom.

United beat Scottish Premier League side Motherwell 4-2 thanks to goals from Haris Vuckic, Yoan Gouffran, Moussa Sissoko and Sylvain Marveaux.

Newcastle took an eighth-minute lead through Vuckic after a Gouffran shot was parried into his path. Vuckic set up Gouffran for United’s second seven minute later.

Iain Vigurs pulled a goal back for Motherwell in the 26th minute, but goalkeeper Lee Hollis fumbled a fierce shot from Sissoko as the half-time break neared to give Newcastle 3-1 lead at the interval.

Half-time substitute ex-Mackem James McFadden scored minutes after coming on for Motherwell from the penalty spot after Sissoko fouled Stuart Carswell in the box.

In the 64th minute substitute Sylvain Marveaux finished at the far post after left-back Paul Dummett delivered a deep cross to make it 4-2 to United.

The game also saw Remie Streete, from South Shields, and Michael Richardson make their senior debuts, with the pair coming off the bench late in the game.

Attendance: 4,475 (1,012 Newcastle)
