One former Newcastle skipper says Mike Ashley is right to off-load star players, so long as the price is right.

Former Newcastle skipper Bob Moncur says it makes common sense to let players go if clubs are willing to pay over the odds.

Bob Moncur (talking to the Chronicle): “Sometimes you’ve no choice but to cash in.

"Look at the Andy Carroll situation. They held their nerve and got their money’s worth. It’ll be the same with any player.

“I don’t think they need to sell anyone but if they do get a big offer, as long as they get a decent replacement in people will be happy. It’s a policy that’s been proven to work.

“But then, where would anyone go? After the season Newcastle have just had, who would you leave them for?

“Manchester United or City, Chelsea and Arsenal maybe. But after that, who?

“Newcastle are in good shape, in Europe, there’s great team spirit and a good manager, and great fans. What more could you ask for?”
