Williamson For Liverpool?

Reports today suggest Brendan Rodgers was close to bidding for Toon defender Mike Williamson when he was at Swansea.

Has Rodgers changed his mind following his appointment at Liverpool?

Or can we expect a shock bid?

Is he good enough for Swansea ... but not good enough for Liverpool?

The Chronicle understands through sources in south Wales that the 28-year-old was on a shortlist of defenders targeted by Rodgers before his sensational switch to Anfield.

Williamson’s 25-game stint last season wasn't just because Steven Taylor was injured.

They are both vying for the defensive slot alongside skipper Fabricio Coloccini, and Pardew says they will "probably" do the same next season.

We all know FC Twente’s Brazil-born defender Douglas is top of Pardew's wish-list this summer.

Williamson is far from indispensable to Newcastle, but club captain Coloccini has often gone public with high praise for the Stoke-born defender.

Pardew, though, won’t have any issues holding on to Williamson if the interest completely fades.

Indeed, the defender still has four years on his contract to go and is believed to be one of the lowest-paid members of the current Magpies squad.
