Why Shearer accepted: He loves Toon and knows he's their hope for survival

The first, albeit unofficial, day of the new Shearer era and reports in the North East suggested Newcastle's players were enjoying a day off training after a rather more strenuous afternoon of paintballing. It was the kind of revelation that would have invited criticism in the past and, in turn, prompted the new manager to launch a four-letter tirade at his detractors. But Alan Shearer will not attract the kind of headlines that welcomed Joe Kinnear when he arrived at St James' Park last September. Not even from the chaps Kinnear then so memorably addressed as *****. The new Messiah: Shearer is ready to once again take the acclaim of the Geordie faithful Because, crazy as it is, appointing this particular managerial novicemakes an awful lot of sense when Newcastle had just about given up thefight in their efforts to avoid relegation. They were flatlining and in Shearer their controversial owner has just stormed through thedouble doors with the 'resus' trolley. Mike Ashley does not deserve credit for much. Not even for providingthe nation with cheap sports gear. But he might have just revived hisbattered image as well as the fortunes of his club after pulling offthe coup of the season.
