Newcastle play their Capital One Cup fixture against Man City on the same night that the Mackems play Southampton on October 30.
Police admitted they had “expressed reservations” surrounding the games.
Fears have been raised that disorder could break-out as the travelling fans meet at flashpoints on the Metro system and thousands of supporters flood the North East.
Newcastle Central MP Chi Onwurah warned the fixture scheduling could potentially put “strain on police resources” and the “safety of fans and the public safety was at stake”.
It is believed that Black Cats representatives have classed the fixture as “low risk”.
Ms Onwurah said: “It is rare for the two teams to play home games at the same time for good reasons, including strain on police resources and possible transport bottlenecks.
“I hope the timing of these fixtures was cleared with Northumbria Police and they committed to having the resources to police both matches effectively. The safety of fans and the general public is at stake.”
A Metro spokesman said: “We are working closely with Northumbria Police to ensure appropriate security arrangements are in place on the Metro system on the night.”
Efforts by Premier League chiefs to reschedule the Wear-Tyne derby later this month were knocked back by police.
Officers from Northumbria Police dismissed a bid for the 1.30pm Sunday game to be changed to a 5pm televised fixture on Saturday night.
A spokesman for the Premier League said: “It was originally planned for 4pm on Sunday and we went through the process of consulting with the club and local safety advisor groups and opted to stage the game at 1.30pm on Sunday.”
