West Brom v Newcastle live!

08 August 2009 16:59
A fair result in the end, both sides had chances to win it, Krul being Newcastle's unlikely hero. Newcastle would surely have taken this result before the game but the Baggies will be slightly disappointed. 90 + 3 The final whistle goes - West Brom 1 Newcastle 1. 90 + 3 Duff's drive from the edge of the box is well held by Carson. 90 + 3 The ball is in the back of the net but Olsson's goal has been disallowed for offside. 90 + 1 Nile Ranger comes on to replace Ameobi. 90 There will be three minutes of added time. 88 Krul flaps at a corner but then somehow gets back to turn Dorrans' volley behind, superb save. 87 Good patient passing move by West Brom but Cech's cross floats into the arms of Krul. 85 Nolan is booked for sliding in on Cech from behind. 83 Seven minutes to go will there be a winner? A draw would probably be a fair result, would a last-gasp goal for the Baggies just sum up the way things are going for Newcastle? 81 Cox comes on to replace Wood. 79 Barton almost sets up a goal with his first contribution as his floated ball into the box is met by the unmarked Nolan but he somehow heads wide. That was as much a sitter as Martis' in the first half. 78 Cox is getting ready to make his Albion debut. 77 Moore turns well inside the box but Steven Taylor blocks the shot, good defending. 75 Barton comes on for Carroll to a chorus of boos. 74 West Brom are enjoying the better of the game now but Mulumbu shoots well wide. 72 Dorrans comes on for Koren. 72 Another really good save by Krul as Moore easily beats Coloccini and goes for goal from 12 yards out. Krul denies him with his legs. 71 Dorrans is getting ready to come on for the home side. 69 Carroll cuts inside before going for goal with his left foot but he slices the ball wide. 68 Nolan takes the ball from Ameobi on the edge of the box but the move breaks down. Nolan has been pretty poor today. 66 Joey Barton is getting ready to come on for Newcastle. 64 West Brom surely must be thinking about a change, they are being overrun. Impressive spirit shown by Newcastle. 63 Gutierrez's through ball almost finds Carroll but Gianni Zuiverloon does just enough to clear the danger. It's all Newcastle. 61 Smith blasts well over the bar from 25 yards out. He's had enough goes to get that long awaited goal. 59 This game could go either way, I'd be surprised if we didn't see more goals here. I'd also be surprised if we don't see Simon Cox or Graham Dorrans soon for Albion. 57 The Baggies almost score an excellent goal of their own as Koren is sent clean though on goal but his shot is well saved by Krul before Wood lashes over. Newcastle were cut wide open. 56 Smith goes for goal from the edge of the box but the ball trundles through to Carson. 55 GOAL - Newcastle are level and it's Duff! Great move by the visitors and Duff sneaks in to slot the ball past Carson at the back post. Superb passing move and a quality finish. 53 Carson punches the ball clear under pressure from Carroll before Smith's shot is deflected wide. 51 Brunt goes for glory from 25 yards out when he had team-mates in better positions to his right. He slices the ball wide. 50 Moore is caught offside. 49 Krul then flaps at a corner and Koren in inches away from knocking the ball in at the far post. Had he been a bit braver he may have made it 2-0. 48 Brilliant save by Krul to keep out Koren's powerful right-footed drive. That looked in all the way. 47 Carroll's low ball across goal is well held by Carson. Bright start again by Newcastle. 46 The second half is under way at The Hawthorns. 46 Tim Krul has replaced the injured Harper at half time. Sky Bet's Tom Davies says: "An entertaining first half, which sees WBA take a lead going into half time. If the second half progresses the same, goals are certain and WBA are 11/10 to score next, with Newcastle 19/10. A correct scoreline of 2-0 WBA can be backed at 16/5 and 3-0 is 7/1. In the goalscorer markets Luke Moore has been well backed and is 8/1 to score the second goal. For Newcastle Andy Carroll is 9/1. Newcastle were probably the better side and dominated possession until the goal. After Albion went in front the heads dropped. Newcastle need much more in the final third - especially given how vulnerable they look from set-pieces. 45 + 2 The half-time whistle blows and West Brom have the advantage after an entertaining 45 minutes. 45 + 1 Brunt cuts in from the right flank but his left-footed effort flies well wide. 45 The first booking of the game goes to Coloccini for barging into Wood from behind. 45 There will be two minutes of added time. 45 It's all Albion now - First Greening has a shot blocked then Youssouf Mulumbu slices an effort wide. 44 Gutierrez passes the ball straight out of play in midfield under no pressure at all. The Newcastle heads have clearly dropped, Chris Hughton has work to do at the break. 42 Harper is ok to continue and play resumes. The big question now is how Newcastle respond. Will they collapse given all their troubles recently? 40 Play is halted as Harper receives treatment. he took the full force of Ameobi's knee in the scramble as the Newcastle men tried to clear the danger. 39 GOAL - West Brom are in front! Newcastle are all over the place as Greening's free-kick causes all sorts of trouble and it's Martis with the final touch, atoning for his poor miss earlier on. 37 Ryan Taylor's free-kick into the box is comfortably gathered by Carson. 36 Moore lashes the ball well wide of goal from 25 yards out. 34 Newcastle break quickly but Carroll just can't get in behind the Albion defence. 33 Alan Smith makes an excellent sliding challenge to deny Moore on the edge of the box. 32 Newcastle continue to look the more likely to open the scoring, those expecting a Baggies walkover have been disappointed. They are lacking in the final third though. 30 Ian Whittaker reckons Newcaslte will win 2-1 with Alan Smith scoring both goals. That would be a turn up for the books it's been four years since his last league goal! 29 Andy Carroll goes down on the edge of the West Brom box but no free-kick is given. 27 It's a really good effort by Ryan Taylor but the ball just doesn't come down enough to land in the top corner. Carson was scrambling but he wouldn't have been able to stop it had it been on target. 26 Free-kick to Newcastle around 30 yards from goal, it looks like Ryan Taylor will take it. 25 Robert Koren's right-footed drive is well held by Harper. 23 Luke Moore gets in front of Fabricio Coloccini but the ball rolls through to Steve Harper in the Newcastle goal. 22 Brunt's cross is blasted clear by Ryan Taylor. 20 Gutierrez's cross floats out of play for a goal-kick. A waste there but the last few minutes just about sum him up - he can be excellent but also hugely frustrating. 18 The Argentinian winger then heads toward goal but Scott Carson gather comfortably. The effort needed more power. 17 Jonas Gutierrez does well on the left flank before throwing himself to the floor in search of a free-kick. Poor play. 15 Steven Taylor is fouled by Wood as the pair contest a ball into the box. 14 Shola Ameobi then slices the ball well wide too - at least Greening is not a striker. 13 The ball drops for Greening on the edge of the box but slices his volley well wide of goal. 11 The Baggies win a corner but Chris Brunt's delivery is too long and Newcastle have a goal-kick. 10 Chris Wood does well on the edge of the Newcastle box but his shot is well blocked. 9 Good game so far, both sides are looking to get forward at every opportunity. I won't jinx it by predicting goals. 7 Damien Duff shoots over the bar from the edge of the box. A decent chance for the winger. 6 Albion have come more into the game and are beginning to assert their authority on the game. 4 Shelton Martis misses an absolute sitter. Jonathan Greening's free-kick into the box catches the visiting defence on their heels but Martis somehow directs the ball wide of the target from close range. A glorious chance. 3 Latif Patel reckons Newcastle could surprise many today and pick up the three points - it's been an encouraging opening but Luke Moore has the first shot on goal from the edge of the box which is blocked. 2 Good start by Newcastle as they look to pile on the pressure and take advantage of any uncertainy in the Baggies ranks - they have a new manager too remember. 1 The game is under way here at The Hawthorns.
