West Brom 2 Newcastle 3: Win can't disguise Kinnear conundrum

Worries: Kinnear[LNB] Mike Ashley's day ended in far more uplifting fashion than it started but, by the time his head hit the pillow on Saturday evening, he was faced with yet another dilemma. [LNB]What happens with the manager's job at St James' Park?[LNB] While Joe Kinnear remains under observation at a west Midlands hospital today after the prognosis that high blood pressure had caused his health scare, the club's owner is left with the thorny issue of whether the Irishman continues in a role where his stress levels are likely to increase over the coming weeks, particularly as four of their next half-dozen fixtures are against teams in the top six.[LNB]Kinnear, 62, had a mild heart attack 10 years ago and this latest occurrence does not bode well. Should anything more serious befall Kinnear, Ashley would be criticised for failing to act.[LNB] Dilemma: Ashley (right) faces a conundrum over Kinnear[LNB] Kinnear is sent to hospital after falling ill and misses Toon victory at Hawthorns[LNB]WEST BROM 2 NEWCASTLE 3: The action as it happened[LNB]NEWCASTLE UNITED FC NEWS FROM ACROSS THE WEB[LNB]WEST BROMWICH ALBION FC NEWS FROM ACROSS THE WEB[LNB]Assistant manager Chris Hughton revealed yesterday Kinnear is eager to return to the training ground but the episode overshadowed a team performance at West Bromwich Albion[LNB]that was undoubtedly aided by the three new boys. [LNB]Kevin Nolan and Ryan Taylor both played their parts but Peter Lovenkrands' arrival at Newcastle[LNB]gave the visitors an extra edge. [LNB] Edge: Lovenkrands (held aloft by Shola Ameobi) added an extra dimension to Newcastle's attack[LNB]Skipper Nicky Butt said: 'It was unfortunate the boss was taken ill. Hopefully, it's not serious. It was nice to win it and give him a bit of a lift. This was a big, big three pointsfor us. Games are running out and we've got some massive fixtures coming up against the top teams. We definitely needed the points.[LNB]'I thought the new boys did well. Kevin and Ryan will be great acquisitions. They're both experienced Premier League players and they're going to add to our squad. [LNB]'And as for Peter, it's a bit of a shock seeing someone of that quality being released from a club. He's been sharp and good in training and he played excellently today.'[LNB]Albion manager Tony Mowbray, not given to pitchside emotion, was rolling backwards and forwards in frustration at a display by a pair of centre-halves as poor as it gets atPremier League level. [LNB] The loneliest job in the word: Mowbray looks abject during his side's defensive capitulation against Newcastle[LNB]Abdoulaye Meite, in particular, was shocking. Mowbray tried to deflect some of the criticism by claiming that neither Meite nor Leon Barnett had had sufficient training and that he made an error of judgment in picking them. [LNB]It did not wash with a normally-understanding Hawthorns crowd who booed their team off at half-time. West Bromwich made a terrible start with Damien Duff latching on to a Barnett mistake to shoot through Scott Carson's legs after 70 seconds. [LNB]Marc-Antoine Fortune gave Albion some hope with a quick equaliser but Lovenkrands restored Newcastle's lead soon after. [LNB] False hope: Fortune nets for the Baggies[LNB]After nine minutes it was 2-1. More poor marking allowed Steven Taylor to increase Newcastle's lead before half time. [LNB]Fortune gave the home side some hope with his second goal after 73 minutes but Newcastle deservedly held on. [LNB]Paul Robinson, making his 200th appearance for Albion, said: 'We're devastated. We can't keep letting in silly goals. If we keep on doing that we will be playing Championship football next season.'[LNB]WEST BROMWICH (4-5-1): Carson 6; Hoefkens 5, Barnett 4, Meite 3, Robinson 5; Morrison 5, Kim 4, (Teixeira 46min 7) Valero 5, (Moore 85) Koren 8, Brunt 5; (Bednar 46 6) Fortune 9.
