Toon Take A Hammering

15 February 2012 19:09
Everton reserves beat Newcastle away in November 4-0 and the two sides met in a behind-closed-doors fixture yesterday. EVERTON RES 6 NEWCASTLE UNITED RES 3

Newcastle made the brighter start but it was Everton who managed to get off the mark as quickly as 4 minutes with their first attack, Gueye from the left found Baxter who turned and shot but the Keeper did well to save but unfortunately for him Coleman was able to tap in from short distance to put the home side in front.

The visitors showed good spirit even though they were trailing, a Gueye shot on the 15 minute mark never troubled Magpies Keeper Alnwick but on 22 minutes the game was level when Nzuzi made a galloping run to find Dan Taylor who beat Hahnemann with a deflection and level matters.

It only took 3 minutes for the hosts to get back in front after good work from Vellios who fed Gueye on the left who wormed his way into the box to increase the lead with a shot off the post.

Vellios had a chance to put Everton further ahead before half time but his effort was put wide, Newcastle also had a chance to equalise after McDermott’s effort whistled over the bar.

Then on 41 minutes the game was level again with goalscore Taylor making a nuisance of himself who assists Airey to deceive Duffy and score past Hahnemann.

Newcastle did manage to put the ball in the net on the stroke of half time but the effort from Donakldson was ruled out for offside.

HALF TIME - EVERTON 2 NEWCASTLE UNITED 2

The visitors were the only team to make a change at the break replacing Yven Moyo with Samuel Adjei.

Gueye was having an exceptional game with David Moyes watching from the balcony that overlooks the training complex. He assisted Forshaw nine minutes into the second half but the shot was wasted and ran across the goalmouth.

Everton retrieved possession in midfield as Gueye again causing problems then tricked Alnwick to put the home side in front yet again and this was living up to a thrilling game.

Everton made two substitutions with Coleman being replaced by Lundstram and Vellios replaced by Joao Silva.

After only gracing the pitch for 1 minute, Silva nearly added to Everton’s tally only to be denied with a goal line clearance.

On the hour Hahnemann had to be alert to keep a 20 yard shot from goal scorer Airey out as the Magpies pressed for an equaliser.

This game failed to live up to expectations when for the third time in the game Newcastle drew level to make it 3-3 after a good build up involving three players then McGorrigan lets fly as Keeper Hahnemann was well beaten with a drive from a good way out.

Newcastle must have wondering what it was they were doing wrong after conceding again 2 minutes after drawing level as Baxter back from his loan with Tranmere Rovers won a tackle then shot but the ball came off defender Dummett and leave Alnwick helpless.

The visitors still had the belief they were still in with a shout as they had two efforts that were close but with 11 minutes remaining, Barkley produced a moment of magic which stemmed from a break as Newcastle had a corner and on the counter Everton broke, the ball fell into Barkley’s path who drew Alnwick from his line then delivered an exquisite chip to make the game 5-3.

The visitors must have been sick to concede 5 goals who were very much a good match for Everton. To make matters worse, substitute Silva got rewards after his earlier attempt was cleared off the line to make it number 6 with 4 minutes left.

Silva shot and Alwick should have done better but failed to hold the ball which lands back at Silva’s feet to put the game to bed.

Att: 36, 176

Do we praise Spurs for this performance, or tell a few 'home truths' about certain Newcastle players who were well out of their depth?

Let's give Tottenham their glory, and put this one to bed.

We've had a great season and we won't be the last side to suffer a massive defeat in the Premier League before May is out.

In August Man Utd put EIGHT past Arsenal; then in October Man City hit United for SIX; and Arsenal went to Stamford Bridge and scored FIVE.

It's been one of those seasons with massive highs and lows, and we just happened to catch Spurs on a good day.

The main point in all of this is simple - will the Newcastle players and manager learn from this before the Mackems come calling - because THAT is the fixture that is looming ever closer.

Spurs fans pleaded with Harry Redknapp to snub England and stay at White Hart Lane and the players give him their all.

Louis Saha scored his first two goals for the club and there were also strikes from Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Niko Kranjcar and Emmanuel Adebayor as Spurs moved within five points of the Barclays Premier League summit.

Chants of "you're Spurs and you know you are" greeted Redknapp as he made an emotional return to the dugout and "we want you to stay" rang out on several occasions as the home support made it clear that they did not want to lose their boss, who has transformed the club from relegation candidates to title chasers within just over three years.

Redknapp acknowledged their chants with a warm smile and wave, but it remains to be seen whether their pleas will be enough to make their boss stay at White Hart Lane.

The reality is surely that he is extremely interested in taking Capello's place and on today's evidence, it is easy to see why he is the overwhelming favourite for the post.

If any of the four-man FA board tasked with appointing Capello's successor was watching today, they will have been delighted with what they saw.

Despite being without key talisman Rafael van der Vaart, who was out with a calf injury, Redknapp's men started in devastating fashion and were two up after five minutes.

With barely three minutes on the clock, Adebayor played a one-two with Kranjcar and he crossed for Assou-Ekotto, who rifled home from a tight angle to score after three minutes.

Two minutes later it was 2-0. Adebayor peeled off down the right, muscled his way past Fabricio Coloccini and crossed for Saha, who turned home from six yards.

Redknapp, usually a restrained figure on the bench, sprung to his feet and punched the air with glee.

Tottenham continued to pulverise the away side and added their third in the 20th minute.

Luka Modric jinked into the box and found Adebayor and he laid the ball off to Saha, who smashed home from 12 yards.

Demba Ba curled a free-kick just wide, but otherwise Newcastle barely threatened in the first half.

Spurs were playing some of their best football under Redknapp and the popular manager was on his feet again in the 34th minute as the home side scored again.

Tim Krul's save from Adebayor's close-range shot ricocheted in to the path of Kranjcar and he swept home from 15 yards for his first Spurs goal in a year.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew turned away in disgust at his team's defending and they did little to suggest they were capable of offering anything at the other end.

Ba drove a low shot straight at Brad Friedel but Tottenham were soon on the attack again through Saha, who curled a shot just wide.

Adebayor, Assou-Ekotto and Kranjcar all missed chances in first-half injury-time.

Pardew ditched the ineffective Obertan at half-time and brought on Shane Ferguson in his place.

There was no let-up in the Spurs pressure, though, as the hosts looked for a fifth.

Bale played a delightful chip over the Magpies' back four but Adebayor mistimed his run and the Togo striker wasted another chance moments later by screwing his shot wide.

Redknapp thanked the jubilant home crowd once more as they chanted his name.

Newcastle gained more possession, but they could only muster a weak attempt on goal from Jonas Gutierrez, and moments later Krul was once again picking the ball out of his net.

Saha nodded Assou-Ekotto's cross towards Adebayor and he wrapped his right leg around his marker to poke home and make it 5-0.

With 24 minutes left Redknapp brought on Jermain Defoe and Aaron Lennon for Bale and Saha, who received a big hug from the Spurs manager.

Kyle Walker skinned his marker and whipped in a cross but Adebayor just missed the header that would have made it six.

Newcastle missed a great chance to score a consolation soon after but Gosling skied over from six yards after Friedel had done well to save Ba's point-blank header.
