The Daily Express suggests Celtic could do a deal with Newcastle - Leon Best heading north and Scott Brown moving to St James' Park. Celtic are monitoring Leon Best’s situation as the Newcastle striker recovers from an ankle injury, with the Scottish outfit considering purchasing the star for £4 million. Best has reportedly been told by Newcastle that he can leave the club for £4 million, as Alan Pardew and Mike Ashley continue their clean out of the squad in order to challenge for European football. But Newcastle would rather consider a swap deal for Celtic midfielder Scott Brown ... despite the player claiming he’s not interested in a move. Alan Pardew is on the lookout for a replacement for former captain Kevin Nolan, who joined West Ham after a dispute over his contract, and now a serious approach for Brown is on the cards. The Scottish international previously told the Daily Record: "I've heard all the stuff about Newcastle but I haven't paid the slightest attention to it. "I'm captain of Celtic Football Club, why would I even think about going anywhere else?" But the 25-year-old is entering the last year of his contract at Parkhead, and could see the challenge of the Premiership a big draw. Brown has made 164 appearances for Celtic and scored 15 goals since moving from Hibernian for £4.4m in 2007.
