Newcastle extended their lead at the top of the Championship to five points with a 1-0 victory over Doncaster . Wes Morgan's stunning 25-yard effort gave the home side the lead just before the interval and substitute Nathan Tyson sealed the win in the second half. Swansea remain in the play-off places despite being thrashed 5-1 at Blackpool, who moved up to seventh in the table. Brett Ormerod scored twice and Ian Evatt, Ben Burgess and Gary Taylor-Fletcher also got on the scoresheet before Cedric Van der Gun claimed a late consolation for the visitors. Middlesbrough moved up to eighth in the table with a 2-0 win over Preston at the Riverside. Chris Killen opened the scoring after 29 minutes and Jonathan Franks sealed all three points in the dying seconds. At the other end of the table, Plymouth boosted their survival chances with a 2-0 win away to Ipswich. Bradley Wright-Phillips opened the scoring 10 minutes before half-time and substitute Joe Mason secured a perfect homecoming for Plymouth boss and Town legend Paul Mariner with the second after 78 minutes. Scunthorpe edged further away from the drop zone with a 4-0 thrashing of bottom side Peterborough, Paul Hayes, Sam Togwell and Garry Thompson (two) grabbing the goals. The most thrilling game of the night came at Ashton Gate where Bristol City beat Barnsley 5-3. The visitors led 2-1 after Hugo Colace and Daniel Bogdanovic replied to Danny Haynes' second-minute opener, but City bounced back through a Nicky Maynard double, Haynes' second and a penalty from Paul Hartley. Andy Gray pulled one back for Barnsley 10 minutes from time. The evening's other game ended in a 1-1 draw between QPR and Derby, Lee Cook giving QPR the lead on the stroke of half-time but Shaun Barker equalising midway through the second period.
