The 20-year-old right-back is expected to go straight into manager Gary Megson's squad for Saturday's home league clash against Leyton Orient.
Tavernier, who started out at Leeds' academy before switching to Newcastle, signed a professional contract at St James's Park in 2008.
He has made two Carling Cup appearances for the Magpies and recently completed a loan spell at Carlisle, where he made 17 first-team appearances.
