Chelsea put their recent disappointing form behind them with a 3-0 win over Newcastle in an eventful game at St James' Park.

Didier Drogba headed home Juan Mata's 38th-minute cross, before substitute Salomon Kalou and Daniel Sturridge wrapped up the win with late strikes.

Tim Krul produced several fine saves to keep the home side in it until the final few minutes - as well as denying Frank Lampard from the penalty spot - but Chelsea did not have things all their own way with Newcastle hitting the woodwork three times.

Man City's Sergio Aguero broke the deadlock against Norwich in the 32nd minute, showing great skills to hold off three defenders before poking the ball into the far corner.

Samir Nasri's 51st minute free-kick eluded all to make it 2-0 and Yaya Toure got City's third goal 17 minutes later.

Steve Morison replied for the visitors nine minutes from time, before substitutes Mario Balotelli and Adam Johnson netted inside the last two minutes.

In the evening kick-off, Phil Jones scored his first goal for Manchester United as they claimed a narrow 1-0 victory at Aston Villa to end the day five points behind City in second spot.

Jones struck after 20 minutes as United extended their unbeaten league run at Villa Park to 16 years.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side climbed back above Tottenham, who earlier saw off Bolton 3-0 at White Hart Lane.

Gareth Bale opening the scoring in the seventh minute before taking off his left boot off and holding it aloft in front of the away fans, presumably as a tribute to his former Wales manager Gary Speed.

The visitors' hopes took a further setback in the 17th minute when Gary Cahill was dismissed for fouling Scott Parker - referee Stuart Attwell ruling the Spurs man was in a goalscoring position.

Aaron Lennon made it 2-0 in the 51st minute, with Jermain Defoe tapping in the third on the hour to seal Spurs' sixth successive top-flight win - equalling a club record.

Arsenal maintained their recent impressive form with a 4-0 win at Wigan.

Mikel Arteta opened the scoring in the 28th minute with a shot Ali Al Habsi should have dealt better with, before Thomas Vermaelen headed in a Robin van Persie corner.

Gervinho made it 3-0 in the 61st minute, tapping in after a van Persie shot was only parried by Al Habsi, before van Persie got on the scoresheet himself 12 minutes from time.

The result means Wigan slip to the foot of the table, with Blackburn moving above them and Bolton into 18th courtesy of an Ayegbeni Yakubu-inspired win over Swansea.

The Nigerian opened the scoring in the 20th minute, shooting high into the far corner - but Leroy Lita headed Swansea level 10 minutes before half-time.

However, Yakubu put his team back in front in first half injury time, heading in a shot from substitute Simon Vukcevic at the far post, before wrapping up his hat-trick with another header 12 minutes into the second half.

Luke Moore made it 3-2 just before the halfway point of the second half but their cause was not helped by the 81st minute dismissal of Joe Allen - and Yakubu rounded off a 4-2 win from the penalty spot, after Neil Taylor fouled Vukcevic.

QPR and West Brom drew 1-1 at Loftus Road. Heidar Helguson's 20th-minute goal gave the home side the edge but Shane Long equalised nine minutes from time.
