Toon boss Shearer demands better ammunition to fire Newcastle to safety

Newcastle boss Alan Shearer has urged his team to create more chances for his misfiring strikers. Despite missing a large chunk of the season, skipper Michael Owen is Newcastle's top scorer with just eight goals this season, and he has not scored since his return from injury five games ago. Obafemi Martins has added seven goals, Shola Ameobi four and there are three from youngster Andy Carroll, who started at Tottenham last week. Room for improvement: Owen and Martins have 15 goals between them Shearer also has the option of recalling Mark Viduka or Alan Smith for the visit of Portsmouth on Monday night, although the injury-prone former Leeds pair have yet to score this season. But the Newcastle boss is more concerned about the lack of opportunities created for his strikers who have three crucial home games to guide the club out of the bottom three. Shearer said: 'Our strikers have a massive part to play over the next five games but I know more than most that you have to create chance for people. 'In the first half against Stoke and Tottenham we didn't create anything, so that's something we're looking to change. 'We need to create more chances because there's no doubt we've got the players to finish them off.'
