Toney wants game against Cobblers

Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren will not need to look far to get the lowdown on Capital One Cup opponents Northampton, having this month signed Ivan Toney from the League Two club.

Toney will know the strengths and weaknesses of Northampton, where he came through the academy and went on to make 60 appearances for his home town team.

The 19-year-old would relish the prospect of making his Newcastle debut against the Cobblers in Tuesday night's second-round tie at St James' Park.

He told the Evening Chronicle: "I think everybody knows I would love to play in that game. But obviously it is the manager's decision who he chooses.

"Hopefully I can squeeze my way in, maybe on the bench."

Meanwhile, Northampton boss Chris Wilder insists his side are not travelling to Tyneside "to make the numbers up or have our tummies tickled".

Another League Two side making a considerably long journey to the north east is Exeter, who are in round two for just the second time in 17 years and face Sunderland.

City boss Paul Tisdale likened the challenge facing his players to a whole new ball game.

''Playing against a team from the top league is as much a different sport as if we were playing rugby,'' said Tisdale.

''It's a different rhythm in the game, different requirements, but we're as able as any to give it a good crack.''

Swansea manager Garry Monk wants his unbeaten team to maintain their momentum when York visit the Liberty Stadium.

Monk is expected to make wholesale changes to his team ahead of the Premier League clash with Manchester United at the weekend but he sees victory against the Minstermen as important to the future of the club.

''We are progressing nicely,'' Monk told the South Wales Evening Post. ''We want to keep the momentum going. Our focus is on progressing, keeping the club growing.''

But York boss Russ Wilcox is eyeing an upset and told the York Press: ''Shocks do happen and I've experienced both sides. We will go there with no fear.''

Luton caused an upset in the first round by beating Bristol City and winger Danny Green believes another giant-killing against Stoke could see the Hatters get their league form back on track.

Town are without a win in three League Two games, losing twice, since knocking out the Robins and Green told Bedfordshire News: ''The shackles are off and you can go out there and express yourself.

''Hopefully we can win and move on to the next round and carry that into our next league game against Portsmouth on Saturday.''

Of the other Premier League sides facing lower league opposition, perhaps Watford have the trickiest tie against Preston at Deepdale.

Leicester, Bournemouth and Norwich are also away from home, at Bury, Hartlepool and Rotherham respectively, while Aston Villa host Notts County, Crystal Palace are at home to Shrewsbury and West Brom play Port Vale at The Hawthorns.

The second-round draw reunited Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink with his former club Middlesbrough.

The Burton boss plied his trade as a striker at the Riverside Stadium for two years and was part of the Boro side that reached the UEFA Cup final in 2006 during his final season on Teesside.

Hasselbaink, now 43, will hope his side can emulate what Paul Peschisolido's Burton team achieved in January 2011 when Albion defeated Middlesbrough 2-1 at the Pirelli Stadium in the FA Cup third round in what is the only previous meeting between the two clubs.

There are six other ties involving Championship teams against League One sides; they are: Birmingham v Gillingham, Doncaster v Ipswich, Fulham v Sheffield United, Hull v Rochdale, Peterborough v Charlton and Walsall v Brighton.

The games at Fratton Park (Portsmouth v Reading), Loftus Road (QPR v Carlisle), Hillsborough (Sheffield Wednesday v Oxford) and Molineux (Wolves v Barnet) see Championship clubs take on League Two opposition.

The only all-Championship tie takes place at stadium:mk where MK Dons host Cardiff.
