It just happened to be the first all-Edinburgh Scottish Cup final since 1896 (yes, I remember that one very well), and we couldn't help but imagine the scenes if Newcastle ever got to play the Mackems at Wembley.
The comparison was strange, because (on the whole) the two sets of Edinburgh supporters got on canny well.
I'm not suggesting it was all 'lovey, dovey and giz a kiss', but they could walk along the same street together without punches being thrown ... something that rarely happens with Mags and Mackems.
Hibs were indeed the underdogs. A side who had to wait until the last week of the season to avoid relegation, and although I'm sure their fans expected the worst ... they didn't show it.
But the reality soon kicked in, Hearts were soon 2-0 up and went on to win 5-1.
Going back to the Mags and Mackem situation ... imagine the feeling of losing 5-1 in a showcase like this ... with the whole world watching.
Yes we beat the "Unwashed" 5-1 a couple of seasons ago, and they won't live their lives out without being reminded of it, but to do it at Wembley ... now that would be special.
But, on the other hand, to feel the way the Hibs supporters did on Saturday must be the lowest feeling on God's earth!
How could you live with it?
Hibs boss Pat Fenlon admitted they were beaten by the better team.
Pat Fenlon: "I'm desperately disappointed.
"We didn't turn up, we didn't shine, we didn't deserve to win the game. We didn't show anything.
"The club has been like this for a while. There's no desire and we've got to change the players to change the outlook of the club.
"I apologise to the fans for having to sit and watch that. We'll work as hard as we can to turn things around."
Fenlon denied gesturing towards taunting Hearts fans after he was sent to the stands in the final seconds of his team's 5-1 drubbing at Hampden.
As the celebrating Hearts supporters mockingly chanted "There's only one Pat Fenlon", the Irishman appeared to gesture at them and was sent off by referee Craig Thomson.
However, Fenlon denied reacting to his tormentors.
"No I didn't," he said. "I made a gesture in relation to the way we were playing. We kept giving the ball away cheaply.
"I don't know what they were singing to be honest.
"There is a helluva lot made in relation to the gesture but it was a difficult day for everybody."
