The Time Newcastle Could Have Changed The World!

It was said in 1996: "If Kevin Keegan's Entertainers win the Premiership - football will change in this country". As it happens, they didn't.

Kevin Keegan: “Everybody said at the time we couldn’t win the league playing like that.

“Unfortunately they were proved right. We should have won it, we just couldn’t get over the line.

“If you look at football now, Barcelona, Man City and Man United are playing like that now.

“The centre-backs and full-backs bomb on now and I think if we’d won the league like that, then there would be teams playing like that before now.

“We were ahead of our time.

“It wasn’t planned – every time we seemed to buy a player they were of an attacking brand.

“They seemed to be better going forward than they were defending!

“We looked at the players we had – it was the best way to go.

“Only Darren Peacock was a defender. Bez was a wing-back and Phillipe Albert liked scoring more than stopping them.

“We had goals in us. If the opponents scored three we were confident we’d score four.

“Unfortunately, a couple of times it went the other way.

“I haven’t seen a lot of them since I managed them. We didn’t win a title but we won a lot of friends.

“Despite the 4-3 defeats to Liverpool, we enjoyed it. The game (in 1996) should have been over before Stan Collymore’s goal.

“Once you start missing chances in the league you get punished.”
