The Sunbed Kid Signs Two Toon Youngsters

Gateshead have signed two of Newcastle United's young prospects in a bid to avoid relegation. Gateshead manager Ian Bogie, who played for Newcastle between 1986/89 making 18 appearances, has taken full-back James Tavernier and Faroe Islands international striker Joan Simun Edmundsson for a month. Bogie, who was known as the "sun-bed kid" and was possibly the only orange player ever to play in the Football League, signed from Wallsend Boys Club and left to go to Preston North End. Gateshead are struggling in the Blue Square Premier due to a bad month of results and are hovering just above the relegation zone. Ian Bogie: "Both players are highly rated at Newcastle. "I tried to bring in Tavernier earlier in the season but he was needed as cover for Sol Campbell and Danny Simpson while Edmundsson impressed in the two friendlies we had against United. "He is strong and a good athlete. Both players have a bright future in the game and I am delighted to bring them to Gateshead. "Alan Pardew is keen for his young players to go out and get experience in the professional game and we are grateful to both Newcastle and Sunderland for their assistance. "Tavernier will come in at right back and Edmundsson, who has played up front as a lone striker for the Faroe Islands, on the left. "After the heavy defeat at Southport we needed to freshen things up and bringing three talented players in from our two Premier League neighbours will do just that."
