Terracing Has No Chance Of Returning To English Game

The campaign by a group of fans to allow terracing back in Premiership stadiums has hit a major problem.

The grounds for appeal was that terracing has been a big success in Germany, with many stadiums having sections where supporters can stand.

But that has gone 'arse-over-tit' this week because Germany's police union chief has called for all-seater stadia and perimeter fencing to combat the growing problem of hooliganism in the Bundesliga.

Outbreaks of violence at German football matches are on the rise and Rainer Wendt, who will meet with other union members in the German state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania this week, is to propose severe measures to stifle this increase.

Rainer Wendt: "Standing areas have got to be scrapped.

"The fences need to be raised and clubs should be ordered to pay 100,000 euros for every outbreak (of violence)."

Groups of Cologne followers hit the headlines twice for hounding visiting fans and attacking them in motorway service stations, while a pitch invasion overshadowed the second leg of the Bundesliga play-off between Fortuna Dusseldorf and Hertha Berlin.
