Team of the Week: Nolan inspires rampant Newcastle

Football.co.uk's Joe Strange looks back over the weekend's Premier League action to pick his team of the week.

Goalkeeper - Robert Green, West Ham United

After a less than convincing start to the new season Green has put in some superb performances in recent weeks. His confidence looks to be back and he was at his very best to deny Arsenal time and time again on Saturday afternoon.

Right-back -Branislav Ivanovic, Chelsea

Picked over the now fit again Jose Bosingwa, Ivanovic justified his selection with a vital winning goal just six minutes from the end against Blackburn. The powerful defender also stood up well to the physical threat posed by Sam Allardyce's side.

Central defence - Roger Johnson, Birmingham City

Faced with the strength of Emile Heskey and the trickery of Ashley Young, Johnson had a tough task on his hands at the heart of the Birmingham defence. But the former Cardiff man was once again a rock at the back, helping his side record a deserved point.

Central defence - Sylvain Distin, Everton

Distin has been in excellent form in recent weeks, contributing hugely to Everton's dramatic improvement on the pitch. And the big Frenchman was at it again on Saturday, consistently winning headers against Kenwyne Jones and helping the Blues to another clean sheet.

Left-back - Carlos Salcido, Fulham

At just £1.6 million Salcido is beginning to look like one of the bargains of the summer. The pacey full-back impressed at both ends of the pitch once again, providing a pin-point cross for Clint Dempsey to head home the winning goal.

Right-midfield - Joey Barton, Newcastle United

Everytime I watch Joey Barton the more impressed I am. He might not have got on the scoresheet in yesterday's 5-1 derby demolition over Sunderland but he still played a huge part with an all-action midfield display.

Central midfield - Kevin Nolan, Newcastle United

Nolan has made a name for himself as a goal-scoring midfielder over the years and yesterday showed why. A fantastic hat-trick against Sunderland showed off his predatory instincts in front of goal, while also confirming his status as a Toon Army hero.

Central midfield - Yuri Zhirkov, Chelsea

Signed for £18 million in the summer of 2009, Zhirkov was starting to look like a massive waste of money with injuries and a lack of form damaging his progress. But over the last month he has forced himself into Carlo Ancelotti's starting XI with a string of promising displays, the latest coming in the 2-1 win at Ewood Park on Saturday.

Left-midfield - Nani, Manchester United

While he might not be as prolific in front of goal as Ronaldo, few could argue that Nani hasn't relished the increased responsibility given to him over the past season and a bit. His strike against Spurs was controversial but he showed quick thinking to cap off another impressive showing.

Striker - Shola Ameobi, Newcastle United

Ameobi completes the Newcastle trio after his brace against the Mackems at St James' Park. He took his penalty with aplomb and then produced a stunning volley to put his side 4-0 up - surely a contender for goal of the month.

Striker - Clint Dempsey, Fulham

With Bobby Zamora out injured, Moussa Dembele new to the Premier League and Andy Johnson only just returning from the treatment room, Dempsey has been under big pressure to deliver the goals for Mark Hughes' side. He did just that against Wigan, scoring twice to secure a comfortable three points.
